How To Turn On Location Services On iPhone

On the App Store, there are several apps for your iPhone which needs your device’s location in order to function properly.

Your camera app, social networking apps, shopping apps, cab booking apps etc. etc., you get the idea. They all need access to your iPhone’s location in order to work as they are supposed to. Therefore, it is advised that you should keep the location services on iPhone turned on.

Some folks keep it turned off to save some battery life. Understandable. But everytime you launch an app which requires your location, it will prompt you to turn on location services every time.

To get rid of those annoying pop-ups, it’s better to turn on the locations permanently. And here’s how you can do it.

How To Turn On Location Services on iPhone

Step #1 – Jump into your device’s main Settings. Scroll down till you find Privacy. Tap on it.

Step #2 – Right at the top you’ll see Location Services. Tap on it.

Step #3 – Finally, all you’ve got to do is turn on the toggle of Location Services.

Now in case you are too lazy to go through above three steps, you can just search for Location on the main Settings app. It will take you directly to the page where you can just turn on/off the toggle.

How To Turn On Location Services On iPhone On A Per-App Basis

To turn on location services on a per-app basis doesn’t really require additional steps than what I mentioned above.

First of all, go through the above 3 steps and turn on the location services.

Just after turning it on, a list of all the apps which require location services will appear. From here, you can control which apps can use location services and which ones can’t.

You can either set it to Always or Never or only While Using the App.

In some apps, you’ll see only two options – Never or While Using the App. And in some, all the three.

Another interesting thing is that it also provides you with an explanation as in why the app needs access to your iPhone’s location.

Take the Camera app for example. It says – “Photos and videos will be tagged with the location where they are taken.”

How To Know Which App Has Recently Used Your Location

To answer this question let us, once again, take the example of the Camera app. Well, this time you don’t need to open it. You just have to notice a little arrow icon. In the below screenshot, the arrow can be seen next to ‘Camera’ but before ‘While Using’.

Now, what does that arrow mean?

For this, you’ll have to scroll all the way down.

  • A hollow arrow indicates that an item may receive your location under certain conditions.
  • A purple arrow indicates that an item has recently used your location.
  • A grey icon indicates that an item has used your location in the last 24 hours.

So the grey arrow next to the Camera app indicates that the camera app used location services in the last 24 hours.

In the below screenshot, there is a purple arrow next to Siri & Dictation. That means Siri used my iPhone’s Location recently. Now it has become pretty self-explanatory, right?
